Abstract

This study examines the potential for adapting the indigenous Igbo Igba Boi apprenticeship model to digital skills development within Nigeria's startup ecosystem. Through a qualitative, co-creative design featuring interviews with 83 participants, including tech founders, established Ogas, Bois, and knowledge holders, it analyses how this traditional system can be reimagined for technology work. The findings reveal that while Igba Boi offers a powerful foundation for long-term mentorship and economic independence, imported training frameworks remain dangerously decontextualised from local labour realities. Furthermore, the research highlights that gender inclusion must be a central design condition rather than an optional add-on, as standard innovation policies actively reproduce the historic exclusion of women. The study concludes that a viable hybrid model must be technologically forward, culturally grounded, and intentionally inclusive.
